Over the years I have created or generated a number of videos or audio files distributed across many online locations mainly

My blog https://gravityisahat.co.uk/

My academic website https://chrisnewell.gravityisahat.co.uk/

My collected creative writing website https://fleeting.gravityisahat.co.uk/
This will soon be superseded by a downloadable pdf of my complete creative writing.

My site focused on  The Red Telephone Box That Talks A Bit Like Me https://k6.gravityisahat.co.uk/

The Creative Speech Technology (CreST) Network. A research network I created with my PhD Supervisor Alistair Edwards in 2011. https://crest.gravityisahat.co.uk/index.php

The Last 11 years

The Red Telephone Box That Talks A Bit Like Me – the first three videos all develop themes around my telephone box installation http://k6.gravityisahat.co.uk/

Antisanta

Ash

Sylvia – still cannot make my mind up on a title. Made with my next door neighbour. It explores something I care about just not sure what.

My My – playing at making a music video

Unuseless Visor – The unuseless series made https://unuseless.gravityisahat.co.uk/ to the 10 tenets of Chindogu https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chind%C5%8Dgu. If you don’t know what that is Google it, it’s very cool.

Unuseless Tie

Talking Toys – music video I made with Lisa. An excellent collaboration despite a lot of conflicting views.

Previous decades

Normans Leap – I submitted this for a film production module I did for my masters at Huddersfield University around 1999. Interesting to see the same obsessions. Norman is just a psychopathic Tuffin.

Audio only

Various audio sequences featuring synthetic speech.

Opera

All bar one of the operas I directed for Mid Wales Opera (MWO) were videoed with a camera at the back of the venue. The quality is not great but there are some nice moments. You can find them all on my YouTube channel opera playlist

The full credits for all the operas shown are here

Dirty Tricks (audio only) – a terrible flop at the time that cost me my sanity and nearly my house. In retrospect it was the best thing I ever did.

Preview performance we did to get funding. Courtesy of Paul Barker.

La Pazzia Senile – an English amateur madrigal group perform Banchieri’s opera. This went down a storm at the South Bank. We filmed a dress rehearsal in some hall or other. Terrible quality but still quite funny at times.

More opera stills

Operas I directed included here are The Magic Flute, 2 productions, The Tales of Hoffman, Rigoletto, Die Fledermaus, The Barber of Seville and Cenerentola but 95% of my opera work is completely undocumented (thank goodness as so much was terrible). We have clippings/newspaper reviews but I have no intention of uploading those even the enthusiastic ones. I would like to credit the designers but sadly we are out of touch and I can only recall first names. My most intense collaborations on many projects were with Paul Barker composer https://paulalanbarker.net/about/, Stephen Chance actor/writer https://www.mandy.com/u/stephen-chance/, and for the Mid Wales Opera company https://www.midwalesopera.co.uk/about/mwo-productions-since-1989/ in particular Keith Darlington conductor and Bob Wallbank production manager/lighting designer. My work as assistant director was principally at Glyndebourne Festival Opera https://www.glyndebourne.com/ (the DVD titles are Glyndebourne productions) and The National Theatre https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/home/. I also worked on semi staged performances for the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican including the subsequent CD recording of Britten’s A Midsummer Nights Dream with Sir Colin Davis included here.
